ADHD
& Overwhelm

Therapy in person at QueenCare in Brockville and virtually across Ontario.

When keeping up with everyday life feels like a full-time job.

Maybe you're constantly making lists, setting reminders, creating new systems, and promising yourself that this time you'll stay on top of everything—only to find yourself overwhelmed again.

You may struggle with focus, organization, procrastination, emotional regulation, or getting started on tasks even when they're important to you. And after years of feeling like you should simply be able to “try harder,” those struggles can start to affect how you see yourself.

Therapy can help you better understand the way your brain works, develop strategies that fit your actual life, and begin replacing self-criticism with greater understanding and self-compassion.

Does Any of This Feel Familiar?

  • You have a dozen things running through your mind at once and aren't sure where to start.

  • You make lists and systems to stay organized—but maintaining the system becomes another task.

  • You procrastinate until something becomes urgent, then wonder why you couldn't just start sooner.

  • You can focus intensely on something that interests you but struggle to begin seemingly simple tasks.

  • You frequently lose track of appointments, belongings, conversations, or what you walked into a room to do.

  • Small interruptions can completely derail what you were doing.

  • You feel easily overstimulated by noise, clutter, touch, competing demands, or having too many people needing something from you.

  • You experience emotions intensely and sometimes need time to recover after becoming overwhelmed.

  • You look at what other people seem to manage and wonder, “Why can't I just do this?”

  • You may have spent years being described as too sensitive, disorganized, forgetful, lazy, or not living up to your potential—even though you've been trying incredibly hard.

Struggling with executive functioning isn't a reflection of your intelligence, effort, or how much you care.

ADHD & Overwhelm Can Look Different for Everyone

Executive Functioning
Difficulty starting tasks, prioritizing, organizing, managing time, remembering responsibilities, or following through—even when you genuinely want to.

Overstimulation
Noise, clutter, touch, interruptions, social demands, or simply having too much happening at once can leave your nervous system feeling overloaded.

Emotional Regulation
Emotions may arrive quickly and intensely. Frustration, rejection, disappointment, or conflict can sometimes feel much bigger in the moment than you expect.

Procrastination & Task Paralysis
Knowing what needs to be done doesn't always translate into being able to start. Tasks can feel strangely impossible until urgency finally kicks in.

Masking & Perfectionism
You may have learned to compensate by overpreparing, people-pleasing, staying hyper-organized, or working twice as hard so others don't see how difficult things feel underneath.

Burnout & Self-Criticism
Years of pushing yourself to function in ways that don't come naturally can leave you exhausted—and believing the problem is somehow you.

Wondering if it might be ADHD?

You don't need to have everything figured out before beginning therapy. Some clients come to Path Forward with an existing ADHD diagnosis, while others are beginning to recognize patterns in themselves and wondering whether ADHD may be part of their experience.

While psychotherapy with Path Forward is not an ADHD diagnostic assessment, we can explore the challenges you're experiencing, develop practical strategies, and support you in deciding whether pursuing a formal assessment may be helpful.
